William Kennedy Blake Recollections, . 1893-1895

William Kennedy Blake was a teacher in Texas, 1848-1850, and in North Carolina, 1850-1859. He was president of a Methodist women's college in Spartanburg, S.C., from 1859 until shortly after the Civil War. He was a merchant in Spartanburg, S.C., after the Civil War. The collection includes recollections of Blake's family and boyhood in Fayetteville, N.C.; education at the University of North Carolina; teaching and frontier life in Leon County, Tex., 1848-1850; teaching at schools in Fayetteville, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., and Ansonville, N.C., in the 1850s; and serving as president of a Methodist women's college in Spartanburg, S.C., from 1859 until shortly after the Civil War. He described life in Spartanburg during the Civil War and briefly mentioned his mercantile business in Spartanburg after the war.
